About CMS

Tibbett Award
In 1998, 2000 and 2007, CMS received the Tibbetts Award for Outstanding Small Business in the State of DE. This award is given by the Small Business Administration to firms judged to exemplify the best in SBIR (Small Business Innovation and Research).

Compact Membrane Systems, Inc. is a technology company located in Wilmington, Delaware. It was founded in 1993 after acquiring exclusive rights to certain DuPont patents and fluoropolymers. CMS today has a growing patent portfolio due to a successful track record of obtaining research grants.

Compact Membrane Systems' focus is on the research, development and commercialization of membranes and thin films composed of fluorinated polymers with exceptional gas transport properties and chemical resistance.

Applications where CMS technology is used fall into two general categories, membrane cartridges for gas separation and membrane contactors for the introduction or removal of gases from liquids. Examples of gas separation applications are: oxygen enrichment of air; nitrogen enrichment of air; and separation of volatile organic chemicals from air, all cases where a high productivity membrane is required.

CMS membrane contactors provide a nonporous but highly gas transmissive barrier to liquids. Examples of typical applications include: deoxygenation or degassing of oils and solvents; ozonation of aqueous solutions; and dehydration of solvents, oils, or fluids that would otherwise be damaged by water evaporation through heating.

CMS has developed or is developing a number of clean energy applications. Some examples are: Nitrogen Enriched Air for diesel engine NOx emissions reduction, gasoline vapor recovery, dehydration of wind turbine gear oil, and dehydration of green fuels (such as biodiesel, ethanol, and biobutanol).

CMS's business model is to develop coating and membrane manufacturing technologies in-house, and to locate and demonstrate product applications uniquely suited to our products. In some cases, we establish collaborative partnerships with companies seeking to introduce these products into the market.

Our company offers prospective partners a strong and growing technology portfolio, a unique family of fluoropolymer membrane materials, an ability to identify and serve niche markets, and an ability to both rapidly and cost-effectively drive the product development process.
